Salt Applicator Workshops
The Commission continued to support Fortin Consulting’s MPCA 319 grant by co-sponsoring Winter Parking Lot and Sidewalk Maintenance Workshops for public and private salt applicators. Workshops were held in the cities of Brooklyn Center, Crystal, Maple Grove, Plymouth, and Robbinsdale. The focus of the free workshops was to present information and encourage discussion of techniques to mitigate the effects of de-icing materials on the environment without compromising safety. Attendees had the opportunity to attain MPCA Level One Certification in Snow & Ice Control Best Practices.
The Commissioners' Education and Public Outreach Committe (EPOC) has developed a brochure called
A Low Salt Diet for Shingle Creek. It describes ways in which citizens and small commercial operators can help reduce salt use ni the watershed by using Best Management Pactrices (BMPs) for salt application. The Commissions also offer trianing to prive contractors so they understand how they can use BMPs to use road salt more effectively.
